4th Annual Winter Movie Get-Together

Date: Sunday, January 16, 2011

It's time for the 4th Annual Winter Movie Get-Together!

In the past we've had between 6 and 16 folks over the house and spent the afternoon and evening watching movies, eating, drinking, telling stories, and generally having a lot of laughs. I'm hoping for an even bigger turnout this year - I've got lots of room, and there's always plenty of food and drink on hand.

In 2008 we watched the entire "Long Way Down" series. For 2009 we did "Race to Dakar". Last year we had several movies running on different screens, including "Mondo Enduro", and the Top Gear Vietnam special. This year I will continue that theme, showing several DVDs on different motorcycling interests on different screens. BTW, movie/dvd suggestions are always welcome.

The lineup is not decided on, but could include:

The classic motorcycle documentary conveys the danger and thrill of the high-speed chase, the rugged freedom of off-roading and the true spirit of the sport of motorcycling. Also features a tribute to Steve McQueen, who was an avid cyclist. Nominated for an Academy Award. The drama and excitement of long-distance motorcycle competition unfolds in Hard Miles, the documentary of the 2007 Iron Butt Rally. First-hand accounts from the riders themselves depict the mindset required to undertake the Iron Butt, as well as providing invaluable insight into the ins and outs of making a successful rally run. This entertaining and informative document provides a wealth of information for future Iron Butt riders and all fans of long-distance riding. A heart-hammering sensation at Slamdance, Faster is an electrifying tribute to the white-knuckle world of the Motorcycle Grand Prix--the fastest sport on two wheels--where only the most audacious competitors race at speeds over 200mph and crash at over 100mph. Narrated by Ewan McGregor (Big Fish, Star Wars: Episodes I-III), Faster chases two seasons’ worth of the world championship, featuring revealing interviews with riders, mechanics, doctors, commentators and fans. "American Cafe" is a look into Cafe Racer motorcycle culture in the United States. Transplanted from Europe, the term "Cafe Racer" describes both a type of motorcycle as well as the personality of those who ride them. American Cafe tells the story of this culture in America by following two motorcyclists attempting to build Cafe Racers to ride in the Slimey Crud Motorcycle Gang Cafe Racer Run; one of the most well known, yet least understood, cafe racer events in the country.

This is NOT a riding event. Feel free to ride if you wish, but you'll be riding home in the freezing cold darkness :-) Maybe some of you can carpool?

I'll provide a good selection of food and beverages for lunch and during the show (including the much-commented-on stuffed pepper soup), and we'll order out for dinner if it goes that long.

Once I get a sense of how many of you folks (my home "crew") are interested I'll see about opening it up to the great unwashed STN masses.

Ride safe!
