3rd Annual Winter Movie Get-Together

Date: Sunday, January 10, 2010

It's time for the 3rd Annual Winter Movie Get-Together!

In the past we've had about 10 folks over the house and spent the afternoon and evening watching the movies, eating, drinking, telling stories, and generally having a lot of laughs. I'm hoping for an even bigger turnout this year - I've got lots of room, and there's always plenty of food and drink on hand.

In 2008 we watched the entire "Long Way Down" series. Last year we did "Race to Dakar". This year will be a little different, in that there aren't any new multi-part series to watch. Instead I'll be showing several DVDs on different motorcycling interests.

The lineup is not 100% decided on, but almost certainly will include:

On Any Sunday

1hr 30min

Mondo Enduro

2hr 24 min

"Vietnam Special" from Top Gear

1hr 15 min

Hard Miles

1hr 5min

The classic motorcycle documentary conveys the danger and thrill of the high-speed chase, the rugged freedom of off-roading and the true spirit of the sport of motorcycling. Also features a tribute to Steve McQueen, who was an avid cyclist. Nominated for an Academy Award. An infectious account of six blokes on a cheap and cheerful global circumnavigation via motorcycle. Audacious and seemingly a bit blithe in the best tradition of British Exploration, our crew hops astride their crappy DR 350’s and head out on a 44,000 mile journey around the earth and bring us along via imagery and narrative that at times is both hilarious and grave, depending on the climatic or mechanical dilemmas of the day. Whether it’s disintegrating wheel bearings in Russia or Gerald going broke in Alaska and having to drop out of the ride, this is a fun and entertaining undertaking to witness. In The Vietnam Special, Clarkson, Hammond and May head to Vietnam. Their challenge to travel the entire length of the country in just eight days, thereby achieving what the American military failed to do in ten years.

It features everything you love about Top Gear including sparkling banter, disastrous challenges and Captain Slow doing everything possible to live up to his moniker.

The drama and excitement of long-distance motorcycle competition unfolds in Hard Miles, the documentary of the 2007 Iron Butt Rally. First-hand accounts from the riders themselves depict the mindset required to undertake the Iron Butt, as well as providing invaluable insight into the ins and outs of making a successful rally run. This entertaining and informative document provides a wealth of information for future Iron Butt riders and all fans of long-distance riding.

This is NOT a riding event. Feel free to ride if you wish, but you'll be riding home in the freezing cold darkness :-) Maybe some of you can carpool?

I'll provide a good selection of food and beverages for lunch and during the show (including the much-commented-on stuffed pepper soup), and we'll order out for dinner if it goes that long.
